In October 2026, Microsoft tested a suite of Windows 11 preview features that aim to streamline user experience. The most notable updates include a fully customizable right‑click context menu, a new “Speed test” button in Quick Settings that runs natively without launching a browser, and expanded Start‑menu controls allowing users to select small, large, or automatic layouts. These changes were rolled out across several preview builds during the second half of October.

It’s ridiculous to blame Xbox Game Pass customers for Gears of War:…

Microsoft’s Gears of War: E‑Day faced criticism over alleged $500 million development costs and only 400,000 retail sales. Former Xbox product manager Derek Reese clarified that the figure includes broad engine‑R&D overhead, not the game’s direct budget. The article argues that expecting Game Pass subscribers to purchase the title at full price ignores the subscription model’s economics, noting that subscribers spend 20 % more on gaming overall. It also highlights the competitive launch window and the Coalition’s operational burdens.

💡 The debate exposes how subscription economics reshape consumer expectations, challenging traditional sales metrics and revealing the hidden costs of large‑scale engine development.

Microsoft explains why Windows 11 users cannot drag the taskbar to reposition…

Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 11 users cannot drag the taskbar to a new screen edge, citing a deliberate design choice. Vice President of Design Diego Baca explained that research showed dragging often caused accidental repositioning and that most users rarely change the taskbar’s location. Instead, the company provides a single right‑click option that opens Settings, where users can select a preferred edge. The feature, available in Windows 10 via “Lock the taskbar,” was removed when the taskbar became movable earlier this year. Baca said the change aims for a more predictable experience and that no plans exist to reintroduce drag‑and‑drop functionality in the near future. Microsoft’s statement underscores its focus on usability over legacy habits for everyday desktop interactions and productivity.

💡 Locking the taskbar reduces accidental UI changes, reinforcing Microsoft’s push for a more error‑proof desktop experience.

XBOX made generational leaps with each console — So, what happens next?

Microsoft’s Xbox brand is marking its 25th anniversary on November 15 with special hardware, merchandise and themed cosmetics, prompting a retrospective on the console’s hardware evolution. The original Xbox launched in 2001 as a bulky PC‑like machine featuring a 733 MHz Pentium III‑derived CPU, 64 MB DDR RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce 3‑based GPU, plus a 8‑10 GB hard drive. The Xbox 360, released in 2005, shifted to a 3.2 GHz dual‑core PowerPC CPU, 512 MB GDDR3 memory and an ATI “Xenos” GPU, while offering varied storage options up to 20 GB. The Xbox One, arriving in 2013, returned to x86‑64 with an octa‑core AMD Jaguar CPU at 1.75 GHz, 8 GB DDR3 RAM and integrated media features, though Kinect failed to gain traction. The current Series X pushes the lineage further with an 18‑nanometer AMD Zen 2 CPU, 16 GB GDDR6, and a custom RDNA 2 GPU, illustrating a dramatic performance leap across three generations.

💡 The hardware trajectory shows how Xbox transformed from a niche PC‑style console into a high‑performance, multimedia hub, redefining Microsoft’s role in the gaming ecosystem.

Tested: Windows 11’s 2026 feature update is just 174KB, but your PC…

Microsoft’s Windows 11 26H2 update is a 173‑byte enablement package that activates features already present in the 24H2 and 25H2 releases. PCs on 23H2 must download a full 6.5‑GB feature update because that branch lacks the 26H2 code. The tiny package functions as a “master switch,” turning on new features in under five minutes. Microsoft’s white paper explains the shared core OS and the separate source‑code branches that dictate update sizes.

💡 The stark contrast between a 174‑KB enablement file and a 6.5‑GB full update underscores how Microsoft’s shared servicing model optimizes bandwidth for most users while still requiring a complete OS swap for legacy branches.

Windows 11 is full of web apps eating 1GB+ RAM because Microsoft…

Microsoft released experimental TableView, Chart, and InkCanvas controls for WinUI 3 in Windows App SDK 2.5.4, addressing long‑standing gaps that forced developers to use third‑party libraries. The new TableView supports sorting, filtering, grouping, and editing of large datasets, while Chart offers line, area, and bar series with live data updates. InkCanvas adds pen inking capabilities. Microsoft acknowledges these are not production‑ready yet but signals a shift toward encouraging native WinUI development over web frameworks.

💡 By providing core data‑display and inking controls, Microsoft removes a key barrier that had pushed developers toward external solutions, potentially accelerating the adoption of native Windows apps.

Forza director, who’d been with Turn 10 for 27 years leaves Microsoft,…

Dan Greenawalt, founder and long‑time director of Turn 10 Games, has retired after 27 years with Microsoft. His departure follows the merger of Turn 10 with Playground Games, part of Xbox’s broader restructuring that included 3,200 layoffs and four studio closures. An internal memo from Playground’s head, Trevor Williams, praised Greenawalt’s role in launching Project Gotham Racing, founding Turn 10, and creating the Forza franchise. The merger will see the combined teams collaborate on future Forza and Fable titles.

💡 Greenawalt’s exit marks the end of an era for one of Microsoft’s most influential game studios, underscoring the shifting priorities within the company’s gaming division. The consolidation with Playground Games signals a strategic pivot toward unified development pipelines for flagship franchises.
