How an indie spy game made turn-based tactics relentlessly exciting

Invisible Inc, Klei Entertainment’s indie turn‑based spy game, blends stealth, resource management and procedural generation to keep each mission tense and strategic. Players control a dwindling team of agents infiltrating corporate facilities, using action points to move and a separate power resource to hack cameras, drones and locks. The game’s “yin‑yang” design offers complete information on visible enemies—armor, abilities and future paths—while the layout beyond the starting room remains unknown until explored. Combat is binary: weapons either work or they don’t, eliminating probability from fights. An escalating alarm meter adds urgency, spawning additional security measures as turns pass. Successful runs yield intel, money and equipment, ultimately allowing a strike on the enemy headquarters.

💡 By removing dice‑roll uncertainty and pairing perfect intel with rising pressure, Invisible Inc redefines turn‑based tactics, showing how indie titles can innovate core genre mechanics.

Control: Resonant review — Remedy’s newest chapter is a masterclass in mood,…

Remedy Entertainment’s Control: Resonant, the sequel to Control, launches on Xbox and PC at $59.99, expanding the RemedyVerse with an open‑world Manhattan teeming with gravity‑defying architecture, side quests, and traversal puzzles. Players assume the role of Dylan Faden, formerly possessed by the Hiss, now freed and tasked with locating his missing sister Jesse, the FBC Director, while defending the Federal Bureau of Control from lingering paranormal threats. The game builds on the original’s narrative pedigree, delivering TV‑level storytelling, top‑tier voice acting, and a compelling sibling dynamic amplified by dialogue choices with handler Zoe. Level design rivals classics like Halo and Portal, and combat benefits from new abilities, though melee depth remains limited. Visuals, performance, and physics receive high marks, cementing the title as Remedy’s most ambitious story‑driven experience to date.

💡 By turning a previously linear narrative into a richly layered open world, Remedy redefines how story‑heavy games can engage players through exploration, setting a new benchmark for immersive storytelling in the genre.

A Halo extraction shooter was reportedly scrapped during the development of Campaign…

Xbox’s Halo franchise, now under Activision, saw Halo Studios gutted in a recent restructuring, leaving only a small support team. The cuts followed the release of Halo: Campaign Evolved, a campaign‑only remake of the original game. According to YouTuber HiddenXperia, the studio had been developing a multiplayer project that blended battle‑royale and extraction‑shooter mechanics, initially dubbed Project Tatanka and later renamed Project Ekur. The game would have featured squads dropping onto Zeta Halo, a shrinking map, playable UNSC Spartans and Banished Brutes, AI Flood enemies, and occasional cooperative boss fights. Sources say the project was abandoned when developers were reassigned to rescue Campaign Evolved’s troubled production, and the concept never reached a playable state, leaving fans without any preview now.

💡 The scrapped extraction shooter shows how internal turmoil can derail genre‑expanding experiments, depriving Halo of a potential fresh multiplayer direction.

Red Dead Redemption and Bully “nearly didn’t happen,” Rockstar Games co-founder Dan…

Rockstar Games co‑founder and former lead writer Dan Houser told IGN that two of the studio’s most celebrated original titles, Red Dead Redemption (2010) and Bully (2006), were almost cancelled during development. Houser explained that new IPs face far greater hurdles than sequels, with “happenstance moments” or a single solid build often deciding a project’s fate. He recalled Red Dead’s “difficult periods,” attributing its survival to a core team that stayed focused and methodically solved design problems, while Bully never received a sequel despite its success. Houser emphasized that the struggle to bring new franchises to market makes their eventual release especially noteworthy, contrasting the precarious nature of original AAA projects with the relative safety of established series.

💡 The near‑cancellation of these titles reveals how fragile the pipeline for innovative AAA games is, underscoring the pivotal role of dedicated teams in turning risky concepts into industry landmarks.

A Resident Evil fan is remaking Zach Cregger’s film as a PS1-style…

Indie developer Julian Zamora announced a fan‑made “Resident Evil: The Movie The Game,” a PS1‑style adaptation of Zach Cregger’s latest Resident Evil film. Built with the Godot engine, the prototype recreates an early barn scene where protagonist Bryan (Austin Abrams) battles a snowstorm and a hostile infected dog, using fixed camera angles reminiscent of the original PlayStation titles. Zamora shared a gameplay clip that mirrors the movie’s visuals while employing the era‑specific, pre‑rendered environments that defined the series’ early horror aesthetic. The project remains in development, with the creator noting challenges in replicating true PS1‑era flat textures but promising further updates soon. The film itself has become a box‑office hit, praised by critics and even Hideo Kojima for its faithful horror tone.

💡 By translating a modern blockbuster back into a retro gaming format, the fan game spotlights the enduring appeal of classic horror mechanics and invites a new generation to experience the franchise through its original visual language.
