Fans bring Halo: Combat Evolved to SEGA’s retro Dreamcast console

A community developer, JiltedValkyrie, has ported Halo: Combat Evolved to the SEGA Dreamcast, a console with only 1.4 GFLOPS and four times less memory than the original Xbox. The early build achieves roughly 60 FPS in isolated scenes but averages 10–20 FPS overall, with significant CPU bottlenecks. The project includes culling, lower LODs, and despawning of dead enemies to manage performance. A 24‑minute gameplay clip demonstrates the prototype’s feasibility on the retro hardware.

💡 Demonstrating that a modern, graphically demanding title can run on a 1999 console challenges assumptions about hardware limits and showcases the power of community-driven reverse engineering.

Xbox One games are running on iPhone without emulation, and Minecraft is…

A community project called Utsuro has enabled Xbox One games to run on iOS and macOS through a translation layer that emulates the console’s Windows-derived userland on x86‑64 hardware. The open‑source effort, led by developer @leviidev01, bypasses traditional emulation and has already demonstrated smooth performance with Minecraft: Xbox One Edition, supporting touchscreen and controller inputs. The initiative highlights the growing role of AI and community-driven tools in extending legacy console libraries to modern mobile platforms.

💡 By unlocking Xbox One titles on iPhones, Utsuro expands the mobile gaming ecosystem, offering players access to a vast library of legacy content without console hardware. This shift could pressure major platforms to rethink cross‑device compatibility and cloud‑based gaming strategies.

PS5 jailbreak proves the console could’ve been backwards compatible with PS2 all…

The recent jailbreak of Sony’s PlayStation 5 has enabled community developers to run full‑scale emulators for legacy consoles directly on the hardware. A port of the PCSX2 PS2 emulator, dubbed PS5SX2, reads original PS2 discs inserted into the PS5’s drive and can also install games to the SSD for smoother performance. A similar RPCS3‑5 port allows PS3 discs to launch, though frame‑rate issues persist. Earlier jailbreaks required packaged game files, but the new method restores true disc‑based backward compatibility, even supporting PS1 via external USB drives. Sony’s own PS5 disc drive can read DVDs and Blu‑rays, yet the company never offered native PS2 support, likely to steer users toward its subscription‑based digital library and reinforces demand for official retro services.

💡 By exposing hardware that already reads PS2 DVDs, the jailbreak proves Sony’s own design could have delivered native backward compatibility, undermining the narrative that technical limits prevented it.

Not even Rockstar heads know everything that’s in GTA 6 because devs…

Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier released a new video detailing the massive, decentralized development process behind Rockstar’s upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI. He cites art director Aaron Garbut, who explains that no single individual can grasp every element of the game, which is being built by thousands of developers across multiple studios. The video highlights how autonomous teams add unexpected details—such as the hyper‑realistic horse anatomy seen in Red Dead Redemption 2—without direct mandates from senior leadership. This “controlled chaos” balances strict oversight with creative freedom, allowing small, quirky contributions to enrich the final product. Schreier argues that such latitude is essential for the depth and authenticity that define Rockstar’s flagship titles.

💡 The story reveals that the hidden, bottom‑up creativity fueling GTA VI could be the key differentiator that keeps the franchise fresh in an increasingly formulaic AAA market.
