Arc Raiders is getting a free trial to celebrate its biggest update…

Embark’s extraction shooter Arc Raiders will be free to play from 8–12 October, coinciding with the launch of its largest update, Frozen Trail. The four‑day trial offers full access to the base game and the new Pendola Pass map, though progression is required to unlock it. Frozen Trail expands the map, introduces new enemies, weapons, and a metagame overhaul, including ammo and crafting tweaks and a standard battle pass. After the trial, a PvE test will run from 13–20 October, disabling player‑on‑player damage.

💡 The free‑play window lowers entry barriers, potentially reigniting interest in a title that lost its launch audience. The simultaneous release of a substantial content update and a PvE mode addresses long‑standing player demands for both depth and cooperative play.

How did retro consoles handle graphics before modern GPUs?

Retro video game consoles relied on dedicated, fixed‑function graphics chips that could only draw images, not perform general‑purpose computation, from the late 1970s until the launch of the original Xbox in 2001. These chips, such as the Ricoh 2C02 PPU in the NES, fetched tile data and lookup tables from cartridge memory and generated a TV signal line by line, imposing strict limits like the eight‑sprite‑per‑scanline rule that caused flickering in games like Super Mario Bros. The architecture placed the CPU in charge of game logic while the graphics processor acted as a passive picture generator. Microsoft’s Xbox broke this pattern by incorporating an Intel Pentium III CPU and an NVIDIA GeForce 3‑based GPU, the first console GPU to support programmable pixel and vertex shaders, ushering in modern, compute‑capable graphics pipelines for home consoles.

💡 The Xbox’s shift to a PC‑style, programmable GPU transformed console development, enabling far more complex visual effects and paving the way for today’s shader‑driven game graphics.
