Ternus shuffle: Apple names new mergers & acquisitions chief

Apple announced a modest executive reshuffle, appointing long‑time corporate development officer Steve Smith as the new head of mergers and acquisitions. Smith replaces Adrian Perica, who will now concentrate on the company’s cloud, Fitness+, and News services. The move follows the promotion of Carson Oliver to vice president of the App Store, a shift linked to Phil Schiller’s reduced day‑to‑day involvement. Perica remains within Apple’s leadership, reporting to Eddy Cue, and the changes are viewed as a routine reallocation of responsibilities rather than a major overhaul.

💡 The reallocation positions Apple to streamline its acquisition strategy while freeing Perica to deepen focus on subscription services, potentially accelerating growth in those high‑margin areas.

Despite the overall downturn, Apple’s share increase suggests resilience amid rising component costs. Analysts warn that RAM prices are likely to worsen, potentially tightening margins across the industry.

Tim Cook has no intention of interfering with the John Ternus era

Apple’s new Executive Chairman, Tim Cook, has clarified that he will not interfere with CEO John Ternus’s day‑to‑day operations, instead focusing on global government relations. Cook emphasized a high level of mutual trust and described the transition as a “textbook example” that began years earlier. He reiterated that he will act on Ternus’s directives and that each leader will pursue their own strengths. The move aims to streamline decision‑making and accelerate product releases.

💡 By delegating policy work to Cook, Apple sharpens its executive focus, potentially speeding innovation and strengthening regulatory engagement. This clear division of labor sets a precedent for large tech firms balancing internal leadership with external diplomacy.

Researchers uncover new DarkSword spyware variant affecting unpatched iPhones

iVerify released a report detailing P7 DarkSword, a new variant of the DarkSword iPhone spyware first identified earlier this year. The original DarkSword chain exploited multiple iOS flaws in versions 18.4‑18.7, prompting Apple to issue emergency updates for older releases. P7 expands compatibility to iOS 18.7, reduces its on‑device footprint, and adds direct keychain and crypto‑wallet theft, two‑way command‑and‑control, and data‑exfiltration capabilities. Unlike prior versions that relied on targeted attacks, P7 is distributed through malicious ads in watering‑hole campaigns, allowing infection of any user who visits compromised web content. The variant also evades earlier indicators of compromise by minimizing logging and process injections, and it can issue commands every 15 seconds to retrieve files, upload photos, and scan app containers.

💡 By turning a targeted exploit into a mass‑distribution ad‑based threat, P7 dramatically widens the attack surface for high‑value iPhone users, forcing enterprises to reassess mobile security beyond patch management.

Apple’s new age verification is a game-changer for kids’ safety online. We…

Apple has introduced a single, device‑wide age‑verification system in Australia, requiring users to confirm they are 18 before accessing adult content such as Pornhub. The new feature replaces the fragmented approach of third‑party identity providers that previously demanded selfies, credit cards, or government IDs. By centralizing verification through Apple, the company aims to reduce privacy risks and simplify compliance with eSafety Commissioner rules. The move follows a March 2026 mandate that forced adult sites to block Australian users unless they could prove age. Apple’s system could set a precedent for safer online interactions nationwide.

💡 Apple’s unified verification model eliminates the need for multiple identity checks, lowering the risk of data breaches and protecting users’ sensitive information. It signals a potential industry shift toward more secure, privacy‑respecting age‑assurance practices.
