Apple marks first Apple TV 4K ‘vintage’ with new model imminent

Apple has added the original 2017 Apple TV 4K to its “vintage” product list, meaning the device remains eligible for service but only if parts are available. Once a product is marked “obsolete,” Apple stops providing repairs entirely. Owners of the first‑generation Apple TV 4K are urged to seek service promptly or consider upgrading. Apple will unveil a new Apple TV 4K model at its upcoming “Welcome Home” event next Tuesday, offering a modern alternative.

💡 The vintage designation signals the end of guaranteed support for a decade‑old streaming device, prompting users to act before parts become scarce.

Owning an Apple Home: second-party accessories could be the reboot we need

Apple announced that it will launch a “second‑party” accessory program for Apple Home at its October 13 Welcome Home event. The initiative will allow non‑Apple manufacturers such as LG, Schneider, and others to produce Matter‑compatible devices that meet strict Apple HomeKit standards, including HomeKit Secure Video, NFC pairing, and Apple Home Key. Apple will also unveil new Home products—a refreshed Apple TV 4K, updated HomePod mini, and a rumored Home Hub tablet—to support the ecosystem. The move aims to break the current siloed smart‑home market and reinvigorate Apple Home’s appeal.

💡 By certifying third‑party devices, Apple could finally offer a unified, secure smart‑home experience that rivals Amazon and Google, potentially reshaping consumer expectations for interoperability.

At just 5.2mm, Apple’s iPhone Air 2 might miss the point

Apple is rumored to release an iPhone Air 2 that would be thinner than the current 5.6 mm model, potentially matching the 5.2 mm thickness of the upcoming iPhone Duo when unfolded. The new device is said to feature higher‑density battery technology, promising longer life in a slimmer form. Critics argue that further reducing thickness may compromise battery capacity and overall usability, potentially deterring buyers who previously cited battery and camera limitations. The move reflects Apple’s focus on design over functional improvements.

💡 Apple’s push for extreme thinness could alienate users who prioritize battery endurance, underscoring a broader tension between aesthetics and practicality in smartphone design.

Apple acqui-hires AI startup founded by former NotebookLM developers

Apple has entered an acqui‑hire agreement with Huxe AI, a startup founded by three former Google NotebookLM engineers. Huxe, launched in mid‑2025, offered a personalized AI audio app that turned emails, calendars and news feeds into daily briefings and podcast‑style conversations. After a brief public rollout and a $4.6 million funding round, the company shut down in May 2026, citing “moving on to new things.” Apple’s deal, disclosed in the EU Digital Markets Act transparency database, grants the firm the right to hire selected Huxe staff and obtain a non‑exclusive license to its intellectual property, though it does not involve purchasing the business outright. The move aligns with Apple’s recent pattern of acquiring AI talent and technology to enhance voice‑driven user experiences, while raising regulatory scrutiny over acqui‑hire practices.

💡 Apple is bolstering its AI‑driven voice ecosystem by absorbing talent and tech from a Google‑spun venture, a tactic that could accelerate its competition with rival assistants. The deal also spotlights growing antitrust focus on acqui‑hires as a loophole around traditional merger reviews.

iPhone Duo will greet some owners by name on its first boot

Apple will let customers who buy the new iPhone Duo in its U.S. retail stores personalize the device’s first‑boot screen with a spoken greeting that includes their name. The feature, reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, will be available when the phone is activated for the first time after purchase, displaying “Hello, [Name]” in English or Spanish. Apple’s in‑store system, likely using the Presto software‑update platform, will modify the boot process of unopened inventory before hand‑off. The iPhone Duo launches publicly on October 23, with pre‑orders beginning October 12, but the name‑greeting option is limited to U.S. stores and cannot yet be changed or disabled after activation. Customers who choose the in‑store experience also receive setup assistance and a protective case, enhancing the appeal.

💡 Personalizing the boot screen turns a routine startup into a branded moment, reinforcing Apple’s focus on in‑store exclusivity and customer intimacy.
