Google launches Playground to turn prompts into games, with Unity on board

Google unveiled Playground, an experimental web platform that converts natural‑language prompts into playable games without coding. Launched Wednesday for U.S. users 18+, the service leverages Google’s Gemini, Nano Banana and Lyria models plus game‑generation software. Players can describe a game, test it instantly, and modify physics, rules, characters or settings through additional prompts. Unity partnered to provide a later “Unity Spark” add‑on offering mechanics, high‑fidelity 3D graphics and access to the Unity Asset Store, currently in closed‑beta testing. Games can remain private, be shared by link, or published to an Explore gallery that ranks titles by ratings and activity, with leaderboards and multiplayer. Safety screening reviews each published title. Shares reacted: Roblox down 8% pre‑market, Unity slipped 1.6%, Alphabet rose 0.35%.

💡 By letting anyone craft interactive experiences with plain text, Google could reshape low‑code game development and challenge platforms that rely on user‑generated content. The launch immediately rattled Roblox’s stock, underscoring market anxiety over a new, AI‑driven competitor.
