AI-summarised brief · reviewed before publication

Indie developer Michael Huang released Pumpkin Lights, a free macOS 14 Sonoma‑compatible menu‑bar utility that adds a ray‑traced, physics‑enabled jack‑o‑lantern (or hanging bulb) to toggle Light and Dark mode. Users can grow multiple pumpkin designs, choose from four color schemes, and customize the rope, glow and motion. Beyond mode switching, the app can launch a chosen app or website, keep the Mac awake, mute sound, execute a command, or trigger a Shortcut. The pumpkin reacts to clicks and pulls, allowing users to swing or toss it for a tactile experience. Pumpkin Lights mirrors the concept of the earlier Festivas app but adds richer 3D models, real‑time lighting and extensive personalization. It is downloadable from the developer’s site.

💡 Why It Matters

· By turning a routine UI toggle into a playful, tactile interaction, Pumpkin Lights demonstrates how indie tools can reshape everyday macOS workflows with delight‑driven design.

From restaurant guides to payments, here’s how TikTok is building a super…

TikTok announced the rollout of “Must Eat,” an in‑app restaurant guide that aggregates recommendations from more than 40 million posts and comments, allowing users to filter by city, cuisine, price, rating and location. The feature extends TikTok’s push into a “super app” model, echoing China’s WeChat by bundling discovery, commerce and now dining. Earlier this year the platform began testing a direct‑message money‑transfer tool built on TikTok Pay, already used for Southeast Asian shop purchases, and has applied to Brazil’s central bank to offer lending and payment services. Recent expansions also include TikTok GO for hotel and attraction bookings and a dedicated FIFA World Cup hub via TikTok GamePlan. Together, these moves aim to keep users inside the app for a broader range of daily decisions.

💡 By turning viral content into a one‑stop marketplace, TikTok is converting engagement into tangible transactions, reshaping how creators monetize and how consumers shop, dine and travel without leaving the platform.

‘Knives Out’ director launches iPhone camera app that shoots like his movies

Hollywood director Rian Johnson has released Chromagraph Camera, an iPhone app that applies the same image‑processing techniques used in his film “Knives Out.” Developed with cinematographer Steve Yedlin and color‑science expert Eric Cameron, the app starts from raw data and builds a distinct look without relying on standard filters. Priced at $12.99 with no in‑app purchases, it supports the iPhone Duo and offers tools for color, tone, and texture while preserving the original raw files. The app is currently the top paid entry in Apple’s Photo & Video category.

💡 By translating a film‑grade workflow to a consumer device, Johnson’s app blurs the line between professional and mobile photography, offering users a new standard for cinematic image quality.

WhatsApp announces four new features to make group chats easier to manage

WhatsApp unveiled four group‑chat enhancements in a blog post this week. A new “Mentions and replies” filter appears in the swipe‑down drawer, showing only unread groups where the user was mentioned, replied to, or included in an @all message. Users can now pin messages in groups indefinitely, replacing the previous time‑limited options of 24 hours, seven days or thirty days. The app also adds a retroactive message‑share feature that lets members forward recent messages to someone who joins a group by tapping the person’s name, a function previously limited to the initial invitation. Finally, group‑specific status sharing lets participants post 24‑hour updates visible solely to that group, with reactions and replies allowed. Rollout will be gradual across devices for all users.

💡 By surfacing only the conversations that directly involve a user, the new filter cuts noise in crowded group chats, while indefinite pinning turns any message into a lasting reference point.

I rely on this Apple Maps feature tons of people don’t know…

Apple Maps’ “Share ETA” feature lets users broadcast their estimated arrival time and live location to contacts, who receive a notification and can track the journey in real time. The author, a former Google Maps devotee, switched to Apple Maps after discovering the tool’s reliability for family logistics, such as informing a spouse of arrival times and coordinating pickups with friends. While the capability mirrors a similar function in Google Maps, the author argues that Apple’s integration works best for iPhone‑only circles, especially after the service’s post‑2012 overhaul that improved map detail and routing accuracy in the UK. The feature is accessed via the app or Siri, requiring no manual messaging, and the writer credits it with reducing anxiety and streamlining daily trips.

💡 Real‑time ETA sharing transforms routine drives into coordinated, stress‑free events, turning a modest app tweak into a tangible safety and convenience benefit for families and friends.
