AI-summarised brief · reviewed before publication

NASA announced that Artemis II mission specialist Christina Koch will become the agency’s acting deputy chief engineer on Nov. 1, ending her eligibility for future spaceflights. The move follows the retirement of Deputy Chief Engineer Katherine Van Hooser and mirrors the status changes of the other Artemis II crew, who have also stepped away from flight roles. Koch’s appointment leverages her dual background as an electrical engineer and veteran astronaut, positioning her to guide NASA’s engineering community during the next lunar missions.

💡 Why It Matters

· Koch’s transition signals NASA’s shift from a flight‑centric to a systems‑centric approach, ensuring that hands‑on flight experience directly informs engineering decisions for Artemis III and beyond.

Four years ago, NASA punched an asteroid. Europe’s Hera probe arrives this…

NASA’s DART spacecraft struck the small asteroid Dimorphos in September 2022, shortening its orbit around the larger Didymos by about 33 minutes and proving a planetary‑defense technique. Two years later, the European Space Agency’s Hera probe, launched in October 2024, has arrived at the Didymos system to conduct detailed inspections. Hera will map the impact site, assess crater size, and search for debris, while deploying two small probes—Milani and Juventas—to analyze surface composition and internal structure. The mission will clarify the collision’s effects and refine future deflection strategies.

💡 By providing the first close‑up, high‑resolution study of an asteroid that has been deliberately struck, Hera will validate and improve the methods used to alter potentially hazardous objects, strengthening Earth’s planetary‑defense capabilities.

The 1st SpaceX Starship to survive a launch to space just came…

SpaceX’s first Starship upper stage, Ship 40, survived a July 24 suborbital flight, splashed down intact in the Indian Ocean, and was recovered after a 24‑day sea tow to Texas. The spacecraft now rests upright in Starbase’s Megabay, alongside three newer stages. Engineers will examine its heat shield, Raptor engines, and avionics, gaining unprecedented data from a flown Starship. Ship 40’s return marks a milestone toward fully reusable launch vehicles and informs future recovery strategies.

💡 The recovered stage offers the only on‑ground analysis of a Starship that has actually flown, providing critical insights that could accelerate the development of reusable launch systems.

FAA kicks off review of SpaceX’s bid to fly Starship nearly every…

The FAA announced it will prepare an environmental impact statement for SpaceX’s proposal to increase Starship operations at Starbase, Texas, to 456 launches and 912 landings annually—about 18 times the current 25‑launch limit. The plan is split into two phases: Phase 1 allows up to 100 launches and 200 landings per year, while Phase 2 could raise the cap to the full 456 launches, limited to weekdays. The FAA will assess air quality, wildlife, coastal resources, water, noise, and aviation impacts, with public comments due November 30.

💡 The review could set a new industry benchmark for launch frequency, reshaping regulatory expectations for high‑volume spaceflight operations.

On this day in space! Oct. 14, 1947: Test pilot Chuck Yeager…

On October 14, 1947, U.S. Air Force test pilot Chuck Yeager became the first person to exceed the speed of sound in level flight, piloting the Bell X‑1 rocket plane nicknamed “Glamorous Glennis.” After a night‑time horse‑fall that left him with two broken ribs, Yeager was dropped from a Boeing B‑29 at 43,000 feet, ignited the X‑1’s liquid‑oxygen/ethyl‑alcohol rocket engine, and accelerated to Mach 1.07—about 821 mph (1,321 km/h). The X‑1, a 30‑foot, single‑seat research aircraft developed jointly by NACA and the U.S. Army, had undergone unpowered glide tests and subsonic flights earlier that year. The flight was classified Top Secret for two hours and not publicly disclosed until months later, marking the first practical demonstration that the “sound barrier” could be broken.

💡 Yeager’s breakthrough proved supersonic flight feasible, launching a lineage of experimental X‑planes that underpin modern high‑speed aerospace research.

How mini-constellations could more quickly bring new tech to Europe, and to…

European thermal‑imagery firm constellr partnered with Danish builder Space Inventor to develop the HiVE mini‑constellation, a fleet of small satellites designed for high‑precision temperature mapping of agriculture and cities. Rather than forcing the payload to fit a pre‑defined bus, Space Inventor adapted its modular BIG CAT 600 platform, allowing the spacecraft structure to evolve alongside the sensor specifications. This payload‑centric approach lets engineers swap bus modules for power, pointing or communications upgrades without a full redesign, shortening iteration cycles from weeks to days. The company manufactures most components in‑house in Aalborg, keeping a stock of parts and offering next‑day shipping, which mitigates supply‑chain delays. The model targets niche markets with a few to dozens of satellites, enabling rapid incorporation of lessons learned from earlier launches.

💡 By decoupling bus design from payload development, operators can field cutting‑edge sensors faster, turning mini‑constellations into a nimble alternative to costly megaconstellations.

Scientists discover that some of the universe’s biggest explosions may have never…

Scientists from University College London have shown that hypernovae—explosions thought to be ten times more energetic than typical supernovas—may never have occurred. By modeling the uneven ejection of material in ordinary supernovas, the team demonstrated that the unusual chemical signatures of four halo stars, previously attributed to hypernova debris, can be reproduced without invoking such events. Detailed analysis of a red‑giant star with excess heavy elements, including silver and uranium, indicated its composition results from a combination of a neutron‑star merger and an asymmetric supernova, not a hypernova. The findings, published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, challenge the need for hypernovae in explaining metal‑rich stars and call for revised galactic chemical‑evolution models for future stellar forensics studies.

💡 If hypernovae never occurred, astronomers must rewrite the narrative of how the heaviest elements entered galaxies, tightening the link between ordinary supernova asymmetry and cosmic chemical diversity.
