AI-summarised brief · reviewed before publication

NASA will announce new details on its Artemis moon program during a live press conference on Friday, Oct. 23, at the Kennedy Space Center. The briefing will cover Artemis III, scheduled for mid‑2027, which will send four astronauts to low Earth orbit to test rendezvous and docking with Orion and potential lunar landers Starship and Blue Moon. Officials will also update on progress toward a 2028 lunar landing and the broader goal of establishing a moon base. The event features NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman, Associate Administrator Amit Kshatriya, and Artemis program manager Jeremy Parsons.

💡 Why It Matters

· The update signals the U.S.
· tightening its lead in lunar exploration amid growing competition, setting the stage for the first crewed moon landing since 1972.

SpaceX confirms Starship 15 launch window with massive ambitions

SpaceX announced that Starship’s 15th test flight will launch in November, aiming to perform the first dual‑catch of both the Starship vehicle and its Super Heavy booster on the launch tower. CEO Elon Musk described the attempt as “the first time that an orbital launch vehicle has been fully recovered,” calling it a profound technology milestone. The company plans a steady flight cadence, targeting weekly launches in early 2027 and twice‑weekly by year‑end. The flight follows Starship’s successful orbital debut in September, which deployed 26 Starlink V3 satellites and splashed down both stages.

💡 Achieving a full recovery of an orbital launch vehicle could dramatically reduce launch costs and accelerate reusable‑space technology, reshaping the industry’s economic model.

Global Satcom Services Revenues to Reach $145 Billion by 2035

Novaspace’s 33rd Satellite Connectivity and Video Market report projects global satellite services revenues to grow 44% to $145 billion by 2035. Data services will dominate, rising from 26% to 68% of revenue and generating nearly $100 billion. Consumer broadband, milsatcom and enterprise networks are expected to add $22.6 billion, $19.2 billion and $17.2 billion respectively over the decade. MilSatcom growth ties to higher defense spending and broader satellite‑enabled operations, while NGSO constellations supply resilient capacity for government users. Satellite capacity is forecast to exceed $46 billion, more than tripling 2025 levels as HTS technology and falling bandwidth costs push satellite broadband against terrestrial fiber. GEO orders have risen from six in 2024 to fourteen by September 2026, indicating a shift to a multi‑orbit global new ecosystem.

💡 The surge in data‑centric satellite services positions space‑based broadband as a direct competitor to terrestrial networks, reshaping connectivity strategies for both commercial and defense sectors.

SpaceX will attempt 1st-ever double Starship rocket catch on next test launch,…

SpaceX plans to attempt the first simultaneous recovery of both stages of its Starship launch vehicle on the upcoming test flight, targeted for next month, CEO Elon Musk announced during the company’s Q3 earnings call. The 400‑foot Starship, composed of the Super Heavy booster and the Ship upper stage, is designed for full‑cycle reuse; catching each stage with tower‑mounted “chopstick” arms would mark the first fully recovered orbital rocket. SpaceX has previously secured the booster on three flights, but has never captured the upper stage, which travels higher and faster. Success would validate Musk’s goal of launching Starship more than 10,000 times per year by 2030 and support the deployment of the next‑generation Starlink V3 constellation and future Mars missions.

💡 Capturing both stages proves full‑cycle reusability, turning Starship into a true airline for space and unlocking the launch cadence needed for massive satellite constellations and interplanetary missions.

SpaceX showcases exactly how it plans to catch Starship next month

SpaceX revealed a animation of the planned tower‑catch maneuver for Starship’s upcoming Flight 15. The 80‑second clip shows upper stage re‑entering belly‑first, using forward and aft flaps to steer, then swinging vertical and descending into launch tower’s “chopstick” arms, where it will be secured and hung. Elon Musk said a successful catch would mark the first full recovery of an orbital launch vehicle and estimated the odds of success on the first attempt as “more likely than not.” The company has already tested the hardware with Ship 42, lifted into a simulated catch position, and expects FAA approval to include both stages returning to the launch site. Flight 15 is slated for next month, with Musk forecasting weekly Starship flights by mid‑2027.

💡 A successful tower catch would prove Starship can be fully recovered, unlocking rapid reuse and dramatically lowering launch costs.

SpaceX reports its second earnings today: here’s what to expect

SpaceX will report its second quarterly earnings after its IPO, with analysts projecting $12.72 billion in revenue and $0.13 EPS. Revenue is expected to rise 65 % from Q2, driven mainly by AI/SI, which could double to $5.12 billion and account for half of total sales. Connectivity is projected at $4.84 billion, while Space revenue is estimated at $1.41 billion. Investors will focus on AI revenue targets, Starlink subscriber growth, capex plans, and Starship operational updates.

💡 The earnings reveal whether SpaceX’s AI push can sustain its rapid revenue growth and justify its high valuation. The call will also clarify the company’s capital allocation and Starship progress, key factors for investors assessing long‑term profitability.

On this day in space! Oct. 20, 1970: The Soviet Union launches…

On 20 October 1970 the Soviet Union launched Zond 8, the final flight of its L1‑type Zond program, on an uncrewed circumlunar trajectory. The spacecraft looped within 1,120 km of the Moon, captured Earthrise photographs, and returned to Earth a week later, splashing down in the Indian Ocean on 27 October despite a malfunctioning solar‑attitude sensor that forced a steeper re‑entry. Earlier Zond missions had tested Venus, Mars and lunar flybys as precursors to a crewed Soviet Moon landing that never materialised, largely because the United States had already achieved two crewed landings with Apollo 11 and 12. Zond 8’s safe recovery marked the end of the Soviet lunar‑landing effort and preceded the nation’s shift toward orbital stations such as Salyut and Mir.

💡 Zond 8 proved the Soviet Union could safely return a spacecraft from lunar proximity, giving it a technical foothold that later underpinned its long‑duration orbital stations.
