New iPad mini shrinks just enough to complicate case compatibility

AI-summarised brief · reviewed before publication

Apple released a slimmer 2026 iPad mini with an 8.5‑inch OLED display, reducing width to 132.6 mm and thickness to 5.4 mm from the 2021/2024 models’ 134.8 mm and 6.3 mm. The height change is negligible, but the narrower, thinner body may cause older snap‑on cases to fit loosely. Flexible silicone or TPU cases might still work, while magnetic folios could misalign. Apple’s new TechWoven Smart Folio is priced at $79, but older folios are not yet confirmed compatible. The device launches November 6 for $699.

💡 Why It Matters

· Consumers who rely on existing accessories face uncertainty, potentially driving demand for new cases and accessories.
· The shift underscores how even minor dimensional tweaks can ripple through the ecosystem of third‑party hardware.

Will Apple’s overhauled MacBook Pro finally offer 5G cellular support?

Apple will overhaul the MacBook Pro for the first time since 2021, unveiling OLED displays, touch support, and a lighter chassis at its October 28 “Pro and Tell” event in Los Angeles. The new lineup will feature M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, with a 14‑inch base model and a refreshed iMac. Rumors suggest the laptops may include cellular capability via Apple’s C2 modem, following earlier tests with the C1 modem on M5‑based prototypes. The event will focus on hands‑on demos for influencers and media, not a streamed presentation.

💡 Introducing cellular MacBooks would redefine mobile productivity, allowing uninterrupted connectivity for professionals on the move. This move could set a new standard for laptop versatility in the high‑end market.

iPhone Duo tested to destruction, including removing nanotexture layer

JerryRigEverything conducted a destructive test on the iPhone Duo, subjecting its display to knives, chainmail armor, and fingernail scratches. The screen’s nanotexture layer proved effective at masking minor abrasions when illuminated, though scratches reappeared when the device was off. Removing the layer increased glare and color vibrancy but exposed deeper damage. The Duo’s IP68 rating was challenged by dust accumulation in the hinge, which could prevent closure. The test highlighted the trade‑offs between matte protection and reflective performance.

💡 The findings reveal how Apple’s matte display design balances durability and visual quality, informing consumers about real‑world wear and the limits of the Duo’s IP68 rating.

iPhone Duo screens are breaking, but is it a Galaxy Fold moment?

Apple’s first foldable iPhone Duo is experiencing screen failures that mirror early problems with Samsung’s Galaxy Fold. Early reviewers report a green line appearing on the right side of the inner display, followed by cracks that spread from a central stress point. iFixit attributes the defect to a hinge support bar that does not drop far enough, creating excess pressure on the panel. Similar hinge‑related failures were identified in the 2019 Galaxy Fold, prompting Samsung to delay launch and redesign the device. Apple has acknowledged the issue to 9to5Mac but has not issued a formal response or repair plan, and the extent of affected units remains unknown. The situation raises questions about Apple’s readiness for foldable technology for consumers worldwide.

💡 A design flaw in Apple’s debut foldable could erode consumer confidence before the segment gains mainstream traction.
