Danu Robotics’ fight to build a better recycling robot

Danu Robotics, founded by Amy Ma in Edinburgh, introduces H.E.R.O., a pincer‑claw recycling robot that uses AI to improve sorting efficiency. Ma, a former London bank software developer, identified widespread waste mismanagement and spent six years developing the system. H.E.R.O. offers lower upfront costs and maintenance than suction‑based competitors, potentially generating $485,000 in extra revenue for a site. The company has secured $500,000 in contracts, 200 prospects, and $5 million in late‑seed funding, targeting the $20 billion North American and European recycling‑sorting market.

💡 By lowering the cost and increasing the speed of waste sorting, H.E.R.O. could accelerate the adoption of automated recycling across diverse settings, from large facilities to event venues, reshaping how packaging waste is handled.

Boston Dynamics gives more insight into its redesigned humanoid hand

Boston Dynamics unveiled a redesigned humanoid robot hand featuring four fingers and 13 degrees of freedom, all directly actuated with identical, encapsulated actuators. The new design omits the pinky finger and reduces gripper size, yet retains the ability to lift over 100 lb. The hand was engineered for mass production and high‑fidelity simulation to support sim‑to‑real reinforcement learning. Design choices emphasize modularity, durability, and cost‑effectiveness, drawing lessons from Atlas’s body architecture and earlier hand iterations. The company confirmed the hand’s strength matches previous models while improving actuation transparency.

💡 By streamlining the hand’s complexity without sacrificing payload, Boston Dynamics accelerates deployment and data collection, positioning its robots for faster, more reliable real‑world tasks.

Chinese humanoid robots set to take on logistics jobs at Volkswagen factories

Chinese robotics firm UBTECH and FAW‑Volkswagen have formalized a partnership to develop and test humanoid robots for logistics in vehicle manufacturing. Building on prior trials of the Walker S Lite for vehicle inspections at the Qingdao plant, the collaboration will create demonstration sites and evaluate robotic solutions in real production environments. The focus shifts from inspection to moving components and materials, a repetitive task in assembly lines. The goal is to enhance flexibility for factories that must adapt to growing demand for personalized vehicles.

💡 Deploying humanoid robots in logistics could reduce reliance on fixed automation, enabling quicker reconfiguration of production lines for customized models.

As AI races forward, Utah researchers work to keep humans in control

Artificial intelligence is advancing rapidly, prompting former employees of leading AI firms to warn that safety safeguards are insufficient. At the University of Utah, researchers are exploring human‑AI collaboration to ensure control remains with people. In a robotics lab, Ph.D. student Connor Mattson programs low‑cost robots to learn everyday tasks such as cooking, emphasizing assistance rather than replacement. Simultaneously, Ph.D. candidate Zohre Karimi trains a larger robotic arm to excise throat tumors, arguing that surgeons could treat more patients while staying in command of the procedure. Assistant professor Daniel Brown notes the university’s participation in the Center for Human and Robot Co‑Adaption, a consortium of six schools investigating safe, cooperative robot design as companies race to build powerful AI future systems.

💡 Keeping humans in the decision loop is essential to prevent autonomous systems from making unchecked choices as AI becomes integral to healthcare and household tasks.

Helm.ai reaches $70M in signed commercial contracts for its foundation models

Helm.ai announced it has secured $70 million in commercial contracts for its foundation models over the past year, partnering with global automotive OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, and industrial automation firms. The Redwood City‑based startup, founded in 2016, focuses on autonomous driving, perception, and robotics, using an unsupervised “deep teaching” approach that separates perception from action. The deals signal real‑world deployment and move the company toward break‑even, underscoring its data‑efficient, environment‑agnostic technology.

💡 The contracts validate Helm.ai’s claim that its perception stack can generalize across diverse sectors, from vehicles to mining, reducing the data burden that has stalled many AI‑driven automation projects. This milestone demonstrates a scalable path to commercial viability in physical AI.
