iOS 27 adds brand new widgets for your iPhone’s Home Screen

Apple’s iOS 27 introduces over 15 new pre‑installed widgets, including a new “extra‑large” size that spans a 4×6 grid, effectively filling an entire Home Screen page. The largest previous widget, “large,” occupied a 4×4 grid. Extra‑large widgets are available for several Apple apps, allowing users to display more content—such as detailed calendars, to‑do lists, or notes—on any iPhone, though they are especially suited to the larger iPhone Duo. The update expands customization options for Home Screen users.

💡 The new widget size gives users a practical way to view more information at a glance, improving productivity on larger screens. It also signals Apple’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the iPhone’s user experience through incremental interface improvements.

A Broken iPhone Duo Could Cost Up to $1,499 to Repair

Apple’s upcoming iPhone Duo, priced at $1,999, is already costly to repair. 9to5Mac reports that without AppleCare+, damage to the glass back costs $199, inner screen repairs $999, and other unspecified damage up to $1,499. AppleCare+ significantly reduces these fees. The Duo’s complex foldable design raises durability concerns, echoing early Samsung foldables’ fragility. Consumers are advised to consider AppleCare+ and protective cases before purchasing. The phone’s unique aspect ratio may also enhance gaming performance once released.

💡 The high repair costs underscore the financial risk of owning a foldable flagship, prompting buyers to weigh insurance and protection options carefully.

Apple Intelligence finally gets a release window for its debut in China

Apple is slated to introduce its Apple Intelligence suite to Chinese users in December 2024 as part of the iOS 27.3 update, according to Bloomberg. The rollout follows months of regulatory negotiations that required a locally hosted backend, a hurdle Apple cleared in July. Alibaba’s AI division will supply the necessary models, specifically Tongyi Wanxiang and Qwen, rather than Apple’s newer Gemini‑Frontier foundation models. Consequently, Chinese users will receive only the original, less advanced features launched earlier in the year, with restrictions that bar Image Playground and certain text‑generation functions. Apple’s move aims to satisfy domestic demand for AI capabilities, though analysts doubt it will significantly shift iPhone sales amid stronger competitor offerings.

💡 By partnering with Alibaba, Apple sidesteps China’s data‑sovereignty rules, securing a foothold for its AI services in the world’s largest smartphone market.
