“Our industry is rotting” and AI made it worse, so DayZ creator…

Dean Hall, creator of DayZ and co‑founder of RocketWerkz, warned that the game industry is “rotting” and that AI‑driven development tools have accelerated the decline. In response, his studio released “Brutal,” an open‑source C# framework designed to let developers break free from Unity and Unreal’s dominance. Hall described Brutal as a collection of tools rather than a full engine, but one that can serve as a foundation for custom engines. RocketWerkz is using it for its upcoming title Kitten Space Agency, and Ludeon Studios rebuilt RimWorld on a derived engine called Waylith, reporting 2‑4× performance gains without breaking mods. Felipe Falanghe, creator of Kerbal Space Program, also adopted Brutal for his next project, citing its flexibility for small teams. The initiative aims to give studios an alternative to proprietary engines that increasingly embed AI‑generated workflows and restrictive licensing.

💡 By providing a free, extensible framework, Brutal empowers developers to sidestep costly licensing models and retain control over performance, potentially reshaping the power balance between indie studios and major engine providers.

Konami president says AI won’t change game dev much and people will…

Konami president Hideki Hayakawa told investors in the company’s latest earnings report that artificial intelligence will not fundamentally reshape the video‑game market. Citing a translation of the Japanese filing, Hayakawa said AI might improve production efficiency but will not lower entry barriers, which he believes have already been reduced by modern game engines and user‑generated content platforms. He emphasized that the core drivers of entertaining and innovative games remain human creators. The comments contrast with the broader industry buzz, where many studios are experimenting with AI‑generated art, voice lines and code‑assistance tools. Konami’s stance, captured by Dengeki and rendered by Automaton, signals a cautious view of AI’s role in future game development.

💡 Hayakawa’s dismissal of AI as a game‑changing force underscores a rare executive confidence in human creativity over automation, challenging the prevailing narrative of rapid AI adoption in gaming.
