Apple acknowledges social media reports of iPhone Duo screen cracking

Apple confirmed that a limited number of iPhone Duo units suffer from an inner display failure caused by a hinge defect. The company issued a brief statement on Monday, advising affected users to contact AppleCare for a replacement. Mark Gurman reported that only a handful of cases—four confirmed at 20 Genius Bars—have been identified, with no known international data. Apple has replaced the affected devices with service‑stock phones, and no returns have been reported. The issue appears to surface shortly after first opening the device.

💡 The rapid identification and replacement of defective units demonstrates Apple’s swift response to hardware faults, preserving customer trust and mitigating potential reputational damage.

iPhone Duo just got two new features in iOS 27.2

iOS 27.2 introduces two new features for the iPhone Duo, expanding its functionality shortly after launch. The update officially supports the Apple Pencil (USB‑C), allowing users to annotate PDFs, sketch, and take handwritten notes on both the outer and inner displays. Additionally, Edge Light, a macOS-inspired ring of illumination, is added to enhance video calls on FaceTime and third‑party apps by lighting the user’s face. These additions reinforce the Duo’s position as a versatile, productivity‑focused device.

💡 The rapid inclusion of Apple Pencil support demonstrates Apple’s commitment to turning the Duo into a true hybrid workstation, while Edge Light addresses a common video‑call pain point, potentially setting a new standard for mobile video communication.

Get ready to update your Apple Watch to watchOS 27.2

Apple released watchOS 27.2, a minor update focused on stability and bug fixes rather than new features. The build, numbered 24S118, addresses performance, compatibility, and potential security issues. Devices will update automatically over the air, but users can manually install via the Watch or iPhone app by ensuring the watch is charged to at least 50% and connected to Wi‑Fi. The update underscores Apple’s routine maintenance strategy to keep the Apple Watch running smoothly.

💡 Regular patches like 27.2 keep the ecosystem secure and reliable, preventing the cumulative drift that can degrade performance over time.

Apple raises trade-in values for iPads and Macs, with increases of up…

Apple increased trade‑in values for iPads and most Macs, the second adjustment in two months, while reducing iPhone payouts. The update follows last month’s “Surprise and Shine” event and coincides with the launch of the OLED iPad Mini and upcoming Mac releases. New trade‑in amounts are “up to” specified figures, with iPad values rising by up to $365. The changes aim to encourage upgrades and support Apple’s refreshed product lineup.

💡 By boosting trade‑in payouts, Apple incentivizes customers to upgrade, potentially accelerating sales of its new iPad Mini and forthcoming Macs.

Apple knows the iPad mini market, but internet unimpressed by 60Hz

Apple unveiled its latest iPad mini, touting a new OLED display, thinner chassis, and the A20 Pro chip with dual 16‑core neural engines. The 8.5‑inch panel offers double the peak brightness and higher contrast, while the device gains water‑dust resistance, a 12‑MP Center Stage camera, Acoustic Display, and fast‑charge support. Despite these upgrades, the refresh rate remains at 60 Hz, sparking criticism from reviewers who note competitors offer 120‑Hz or higher panels. The omission highlights a trade‑off between cost and performance.

💡 The decision to keep a 60‑Hz display signals Apple’s prioritization of business users over gamers and tech enthusiasts, potentially narrowing its appeal in a market where high refresh rates are becoming standard.

iPhone 18 Pro sales beat iPhone 17 Pro figures, but only because…

Counterpoint Research reports that the iPhone 18 Pro’s global sales rose 3.1% over the iPhone 17 Pro, driven largely by a 29% year‑over‑year increase in China during the first three weeks after launch. Apple’s larger initial inventory and a decline in local Android sales boosted demand in China, offsetting weaker performance in the U.S. (down 4%) and Japan (down 27%). The iPhone 18 Pro Max dominated sales worldwide, accounting for 56% of units sold. The study cautions that China’s surge may be front‑loaded and its durability remains uncertain.

💡 The data reveal how regional dynamics can mask global sales trends, underscoring the importance of market‑specific strategies for flagship products.
