Best Free Cloud Storage in 2026 Tested on Speed and Privacy

Curated by Shubham · TechCapsules · Oct 2, 2026

AI-summarised brief · reviewed before publication

In October 2026, Gizmodo tested five free cloud storage services for speed and privacy. pCloud topped the list with 10 GB, automatic PC folder backup, and the fastest upload speed, though it lacks end‑to‑end encryption on its free tier. Internxt offers 1 GB with post‑quantum encryption and zero‑knowledge storage. NordLocker provides 3 GB, secure sharing links with codes and expiry dates, but deleted files are permanently removed. MEGA supplies 20 GB, encrypting files client‑side before upload, while Google Drive gives 15 GB with integrated Docs, Sheets, and Slides. None required a credit card or phone number at signup.

💡 Why It Matters

· The comparison highlights how free cloud services balance storage capacity, encryption strength, and data recovery options, informing users who prioritize privacy or speed without a subscription.

Best Cloud Storage Services in 2026: Prices and Speeds Compared

In October 2026 Gizmodo tested five major cloud services—pCloud, Google Drive, Internxt, NordLocker, and Sync.com—by uploading a 500 MB file. All completed the upload in roughly two seconds, but pCloud emerged as the fastest and most cost‑effective, offering a 2 TB lifetime plan for just under $500, comparable to five years of Google One. Internxt highlighted privacy with post‑quantum encryption and a VPN, while NordLocker excelled in encrypted file sharing. Sync.com, the unlimited‑storage option, recorded the slowest transfer speeds. The tests also noted NordLocker’s accidental permanent deletion of the test file and pCloud’s paid zero‑knowledge add‑on.

💡 The comparison shows how lifetime pricing can dramatically lower long‑term costs for users, reshaping the value proposition of cloud storage. It also underscores the trade‑offs between speed, privacy features, and data recovery policies that influence consumer choice.

New Microsoft data innovations unlock what only your business knows

Microsoft unveiled new Fabric and Azure Database features at its European Fabric + SQL Community Conference in Barcelona, emphasizing the integration of unique business context into AI tools. The launch includes Fabric IQ, which embeds governed Power BI semantic models into Microsoft Copilot Chat and Cowork, enabling accurate, context‑driven answers to business queries. IQ Sharing, now in preview, allows secure cross‑organization sharing of business context while preserving governance. Observability enhancements provide real‑time system health insights, supporting scalable AI workloads.

💡 By grounding AI responses in trusted, internally governed data, organizations can reduce misinterpretation of key metrics and accelerate decision‑making. The new sharing and observability tools further enable secure collaboration and proactive system management, essential for enterprises scaling AI across teams.

OVHcloud, CGI Win ESA Contract to Build Europe’s Strategic Earth Observation Cloud

OVHcloud and CGI have secured a 30‑month contract from the European Space Agency to build Digital EO, a cloud‑based infrastructure for storing and processing Earth observation data across Italy, France, and Germany, with support operations in Poland. The system will combine storage, computing, and AI tools to serve researchers, governments, and businesses. OVHcloud will supply the cloud hardware and network, while CGI will act as architect and integrator. The project reflects Europe’s drive to control strategic data infrastructure and reduce reliance on U.S. technology providers.

💡 By creating a domestic platform for the projected 500 petabytes of ESA data, the contract strengthens Europe’s data sovereignty and enhances rapid, AI‑driven analysis for climate, security, and economic applications.

OVHcloud, CGI Win ESA Contract to Build Europe’s Strategic Earth Observation Cloud

OVHcloud and CGI have secured a 30‑month contract from the European Space Agency to build “Digital EO,” a cloud‑based infrastructure for storing and processing Earth observation data. The system will integrate storage, computing power and AI tools across sites in Italy, France and Germany, with operational support from Poland. OVHcloud will supply the core cloud, storage and networking hardware, while CGI will act as architect and systems integrator. The initiative responds to Europe’s drive to shift sensitive satellite data and workloads away from U.S. providers toward domestic vendors. ESA anticipates managing over 500 petabytes of Earth observation data by 2035, requiring expanded capacity and AI‑ready processing close to data sources. Digital EO will link to existing national and EU facilities, supporting programmes such as Copernicus and DestinE.

💡 It gives Europe sovereign control over a data infrastructure that underpins climate, security and economic decisions, reducing reliance on foreign cloud providers.

SPECTRUM BRINGS AI COMPUTING TO THE EDGE OF THE NETWORK AT SCTE…

Spectrum unveiled its Edge Compute Infrastructure (ECI) at SCTE TechExpo 26, activating over 1,000 distributed edge data centers across the U.S. The platform, powered by NVIDIA accelerated computing, places AI processing within 10 milliseconds of 500 million devices, enabling low‑latency workloads for robotics, sensors, and real‑time video. Collaborations with Cast AI, HP, Hydra Host, and World Wide Technology demonstrated the platform’s capabilities, including a live robotics demo and the integration of NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs into multi‑cloud environments. The rollout marks a significant step toward commercial AI deployment at the network edge.

💡 By bringing AI compute closer to end users, Spectrum reduces latency that can cripple time‑sensitive applications, positioning its network as a critical enabler for real‑world AI deployments.

The Pulse: a new trend of CPU shortages

A recent discussion among CTOs and infrastructure leaders revealed widespread CPU shortages in cloud environments, mirroring the GPU “memory crisis” seen in gaming. Spot pricing for CPUs has disappeared, forcing companies to secure long‑term reservations months ahead, often with limited success. Large firms, including turbopuffer and inference providers, report hitting capacity limits despite ample budgets. AI‑driven workloads—particularly agentic services that compile, test, and run code—are driving unprecedented CPU demand, compelling firms to plan capacity up to a year in advance.

💡 The vanishing of CPU spot pricing signals a fundamental shift in cloud resource economics, forcing businesses to lock in costly, long‑term contracts and rethink scaling strategies for AI workloads.
