Playing God: The revolutionary AI that made Black & White still unforgettable

In 2001, Lionhead Studios released Black & White, a sandbox game that let players assume godlike control over creatures and environments, guided by machine‑learning AI. The title built on Peter Molyneux’s Bullfrog legacy of power fantasies, adding moral choices that altered landscapes and character behavior. Key developers included Richard Evans and Demis Hassabis, who later founded DeepMind. The game’s AI enabled creatures to learn and adapt, setting a benchmark for interactive NPCs that remains unmatched in subsequent releases.

Fans might not “pull out $1,000” for PS6 and Project Helix, says…

Former Sony executive Shawn Layden questioned whether consumers will pay $1,000 for next‑generation consoles if upgrades are marginal. He cited the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S’s rising prices and argued that incremental improvements like higher ray‑tracing or teraflops may not justify a premium. Layden compared the PS1‑PS2 leap to VHS‑DVD, noting modern generations offer less dramatic change. He also warned that subscription services can hurt developers’ profits when games launch on day one.

💡 The debate signals a potential shift in how console makers justify high price tags, affecting both manufacturers’ pricing strategies and gamers’ willingness to upgrade.
