Europe’s clashing with Apple means no HomeView for the EU

Apple has halted the European Union launch of its HomeView feature, citing the Digital Markets Act (DMA) that obliges the company to grant rivals immediate access to its technology. The DMA also requires sharing user data, a point Apple argues threatens privacy. Consequently, EU users miss HomeView and related services such as iPhone mirroring, Mac Live Activities, and Siri AI. Apple claims it is collaborating constructively with regulators, though tensions over the DMA remain high.

💡 The delay underscores how EU antitrust rules can reshape product availability, forcing major tech firms to balance compliance with privacy concerns. It also signals a broader shift toward stricter data‑sharing mandates that could alter competitive dynamics across the industry.

HomeView’s upcoming accessories let you build a smart home around one app

Apple announced its Home Collection, a suite of smart‑home accessories from LG and Schneider Electric that integrate with the Apple Home app. The lineup includes a video doorbell, smart lock, thermostats, and cameras, all designed to keep footage private even from Apple. Devices will ship in December, with full availability expected in early 2027. Apple emphasizes seamless management, privacy, and reliability, positioning itself as a device manager rather than a hardware maker.

💡 Apple’s move signals a strategic shift toward ecosystem control, potentially reshaping how consumers choose and manage third‑party smart‑home devices.

The Apple TV ‘hobby’ has gotten far too expensive

Apple has raised the price of its lowest‑end Apple TV box to $299, reversing a decade of price cuts that once saw the device sell for $79. The move follows a period of modest hardware upgrades, with the latest models offering only incremental improvements over the 2018 generation. Apple’s competitors, such as Google and Amazon, remain cheaper, while used Apple TV 4K units can be found for under $100 on eBay. The author suggests using a Mac mini or MacBook Air as a more flexible, cost‑effective alternative.

💡 The price hike signals Apple’s shift toward higher‑margin hardware, potentially squeezing the budget‑conscious streaming market. It also underscores the growing competition from low‑cost, high‑performance alternatives that offer similar streaming capabilities.

What Apple TV hardware the new $59 Siri Remote is compatible with

Apple unveiled a fourth‑generation Siri Remote alongside its latest Apple TV 4K update, adding Find My integration and Precision Finding to the familiar design. The new remote can emit a sound and be located via an iPhone, though Precision Finding works only with iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro Max, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max, iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max. Apple lists compatibility with all Apple TV 4K generations (1st‑4th) and Apple TV HD, and notes limited Mac connectivity without extra software. Priced at $59, the device replaces the previous model while retaining its sleek form factor, offering users a straightforward way to track a frequently misplaced accessory.

💡 By embedding Find My, Apple turns a common frustration—misplacing the remote—into a seamless, cross‑device solution, reinforcing ecosystem lock‑in and enhancing the overall TV experience.

Spotify users on iOS 27 can now ask Siri to play music…

Spotify announced that iOS 27 now lets iPhone users issue music commands to Siri without app‑specific phrasing. By removing the “on Spotify” qualifier, Siri automatically routes requests to the user’s preferred service when Spotify is the dominant app, enabling commands such as “play workout music,” “play my DJ,” or “resume my podcast.” The integration also supports AI‑generated Prompted Playlists, personalized recommendations, library searches, and audiobook playback. The feature is limited to iPhone 15 Pro and later models, excludes EU devices, and requires Apple Intelligence to be enabled in Settings. Spotify says the change makes hands‑free listening feel more natural by focusing on content rather than command syntax, and it is available globally outside the EU.

💡 By streamlining voice interaction, Spotify reduces friction for its core iOS audience, potentially increasing daily active usage and reinforcing its position as the default music platform on Apple’s newest hardware.
